One
of the wonderful features of VIC and RWA® is that more experienced
members help less experienced ones. So many questions arise as an
aspiring writer pursues her career, and who better to help her than the
people who are several steps farther down the road? For example, do you
want to know about POV (point of view) or GMC (goal, motivation, and
conflict), or what TSTL means (too stupid to live?). Or find out the
difference between category romance versus single title
(category/series romance refers to the shorter Harlequin/Silhouette
lines)? Between romance and women’s fiction? How about how to format a
manuscript? Do you want to figure out whether you’re writing romance or
suspense, whether you should try writing short stories and/or articles
or concentrate on novels, which line/publisher you should be targeting,
and where to find guidelines for different lines? Do you want to know
how and when to query or pitch, what to submit to an editor, when to
look for an agent – and so on, and so on?
If so, the Romance Writing 101 Roundtable is designed for you.
It is held at 10:30 on regular meeting days – i.e., for the half hour before the official meeting start time at 11:00. All our published authors are encouraged to attend to serve as resources. It’s a free-for-all opportunity to ask questions and get some guidance. The one rule is, “There are no stupid questions.” Believe me, you can’t come up with a question that we published folks didn’t have at one time ourselves!
RW101 is open to all VIC members and to anyone who is attending our regular meeting as a guest. We welcome writers at all levels of experience.
In addition to RW101, VIC members should always feel free to use our email loop at any time to ask writing-related questions and share information. That’s what it’s there for.
Please come out early for the next meeting and give RW101 a try! Ask, learn, share – and I guarantee there’ll be some laughter.
